Ahead of her show at the inaugural edition of Maiden Voyage festival, Zakia curates a playlist of afro-centric sounds…
This weekend marks the first year of Maiden Voyage, the first festival by the team behind The Jazz Cafe. On bank holiday Sunday, the iconic Camden venue will invite the likes of Roy Ayers, Madlib, Awesome Tapes from Africa and Rhythm Section’s Bradley Zero on their maiden voyage at Three Mills Island. Hailing from west London, radio host, DJ and producer Zakia also joins the bill for Sunday’s party. The NTS affiliate (whose journey at the station began as a production intern) has a weekly show, Questing, that every Saturday morning takes the listener on a journey of “spiritual jazz, psychedelic soul and other celestial grooves from across the planet.” Her DJ sets are similarly electric, focusing on bring a part of her heritage to the fore each time. With a previous residency at Jazz Cafe, an appearance at Resident Advisor’s Live series at Brilliant Corners, and having played shows at the likes of We Out Here, Montenegro’s Southern Soul Festival and Bulgarian dreamland Meadows in the Mountains, Zakia is spreading her diverse palette far and wide.
