Yumi Zouma // In Short

Yumi Zouma - Visions

A band from nowhere and everywhere at once, Yumi Zouma brings together 3 individuals scattered across the globe to create the most exquisitely sweet pop music. Laidback enough so that it’s never trying too hard, and smart enough to make you want to listen to it on repeat. It’s hard not to fall in love with something that will get under your skin so easily. And now they’re finally in London for 2014’s Visions Festival, and they’re top of our list to see.

We caught up with them first to find out more about each member of the band

If I had to describe our music in 3 words, I’d use…
CHARLIE: Kiwi pop trio
JOSH: Non-offensive Kiwi Rock
KIM: Bittersweet dream pop

My favourite film ever is…
CHARLIE: Julian Vares’ last entry in the 48 hour film festival
JOSH: The Party (1968)
KIM: It’s a tie between: Så som i himmelen (As It Is In Heaven) and Les Choristes – incidentally, both are touching films about choirs.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
CHARLIE: Its gotta be between the Briscoes lady and Simon Barnett off 92MoreFM
JOSH: Sachin Tendulkar
KIM: Sheila E

The song I hate the most is…
CHARLIE: Let it be, by the Beatles
JOSH: No time for hate. One love brothers and sisters.
KIM: Songs come and go, but bad typefaces stay with us forever. Take Papyrus for example, even Costello himself says it’s been used to death. Listen and learn people!

The Worst Job I’ve ever had is…
CHARLIE: Professional Rugby player
JOSH: Telemarketing
KIM: Those with minimum pay, maximum responsibly and no real human contact.

If I was in a tribute band it would be a…
CHARLIE: Bic Runga tribute band
JOSH: A tribute to Mahatma Gandhi
KIM: Jem and the Holograms IRL

My Favourite word is…
CHARLIE: Thanks!
JOSH: Phenomenal
KIM: floccinaucinihilipilification – thanks Stephan Fry.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be….
CHARLIE: The power to stop time
JOSH: To work at 100%, 100% of the time
KIM: The ability to teleport at will.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
CHARLIE: At a beachside resort in summer somewhere where the sea is clear and warm, with free room service, free and unlimited super fast wifi, an infinity pool, satellite tv, and a 5-a-side football field with football and goals
JOSH: Greece, on a boat surrounded by film stars
KIM: I’d like to be the first band to play in space, in zero gravity. Hear that Richard Branson? Book us in now 😉

I think you should listen to…
CHARLIE: “Paul Holmes” by Paul Holmes (2000)
JOSH: Your heart! Always.
KIM: Everyone. “You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time.” –M. Scott Peck

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
CHARLIE: “Jeff Bratton and Bracelets” 6 piece band
JOSH: I would have love to have gone to Paradise Garage in it’s heyday and see Larry Levan spin.
KIM: MJ, no questions asked.
