Comprised of vocalists DaCosta, Jean Carter, and producer ghettoblasterman, Your Grandparents craft an effortlessly suave, soulful blend of R&B and hip-hop reminiscent of Frank Ocean and The Internet. We caught up with the trio to talk BBQs, their dream gig and more.

The first track taken from their upcoming debut album, ‘So Damn Fly’ is a majestic, resplendent sonic trip filled with cascading, twinkling melodies and funk-infused basslines. Gloriously laid-back, the track exudes an irresistible tranquility capturing a certain intangible magic. Of the new track, they state ‘So Damn Fly’ is “an ode to the unapologetically beautiful, black, and bold youth of today. We hope the way this song builds and evolves will leave our listeners in awe.”

‘So Damn Fly’ sees Your Grandparents build on the acclaim of their breakout debut EP Been Cold, released last year. With their debut album on the horizon, get to know Your Grandparents In Short…

Last photo on your phone…

There’s a light switch on the ceiling in the studio bathroom. I have so many questions.

Favourite instagram account…

@allgasnobrakesshow

The best venue I’ve played…

SOMA in San Diego or the Novo DTLA.

Earliest song you remember…

My dad used to sing Bob Marley songs around the house when I was really little.

The worst job I’ve ever had…

Big Daddy’s Pizza Corner – Jean

The thing I most love to cook is…

Anything on the grill.  Our BBQs go up.

My Favourite word…

I thought of Too $hort when I read this question ahaha.  Our favorite word has to be indubitably though.

A book I love…

Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now has always been an eye opening resource to refer to.

Things that cheer me up…

Being with friends, weed, and eating really good food.  Travel of course always enriches the spirit. Usually we try and do as many of those at once.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

Somewhere like a meadow or something pretty like that.  The homie just showed us this beautiful place in France we’re plotting on once the pandemic becomes more manageable.

I think you should listen to…

Amindi is very fire, we’d recommend Focus.  That’s our favorite track of hers at the moment. Also just found out about Sault who I’ve been diving into recently.  Their newest album ‘Untitled (Black is)’ is so soulful.  – ghetto

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Definitely Prince or Marvin Gaye.  Two legends that make us, us.

‘So Damn Fly’ is out now.
