Virginia Wing // In Short

Virginia Wing

Virginia Wing is Alice Merida Richards, Sam Pillay and Sebastian Truskolaski. The trio hail from South London and recently dropped their debut album, Measures of Joy.

Released on Fire Records, it was recorded at Holy Mountain Studios in Hackney by Misha Hering, who has done a wonderful job bringing out the spectral psychedelic majesty of the band.

The startlingly realised set of 12 songs diverges in its influences from the radiophonic sounds of Broadcast, the kosmische wonder of Cluster and the rhythmic propulsion of This Heat – all while maintaining a Stereolab slickness that keeps things moving along nicely. This is what the band refer to as ‘evoking an inner world of pastoral fortification’ – which to the layman means the shit you listen to in the dark when you’ve ingested the fear.

That way, the album’s passages of spoken word freakery, brooding electronics and musique concrete, have the ability to fuck with your brain properly. Sure, they make pop music, no doubt about that. And pretty weird pop music at that. But it’s also a rollicking good listen that show the band is drilled in the basics as they set out to fly the coop and aim for brave new spectrums in sound.

And before they launch their two-date aerial attack on London this month, Alice and Sam reflected on the pressing questions of the day…

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
No thanks mate

My favourite film ever is…
The Tenant

The most famous person I’ve met is…
Nelson Mandela

The song I hate the most is…
Ballroom Blitz, both The Sweet version and the Crucial Taunt cover.

Worst job I’ve ever had is…
I worked at this gross Indian fast food place in a shopping centre for exactly one day. I stole a crate of Rubicon.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
Yoko Ono

My favourite word is…
Tamagotchi

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
Really thick neck

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
The womb

I think you should listen to…
Your parents

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
White Noise
