With a string of headline shows, festival performances and a debut EP in their midst, 2019 is set to be a big year for Tungz. We caught up with Bristol four-piece to find out a bit about what does (and doesn’t) make them tick. From smiles, to scrambled eggs, to floating on a barge in Venice…

Having met at University in Bristol, Tungz were drawn to one another with their shared passion for music, house parties and a penchant for 70s TV shows and retro style. With a constant thirst for creativity, the band made a basement home studio, tirelessly worked on music and performing, until Tungz was born. Now signed to Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label, the band recently released single ‘My Baby Can Stand Being Alone’ as a precursor to their debut EP, due out later this year.

Having previously supported Franc Moody on tour, the four-piece have become an outstanding live act, regularly playing in Bristol and selling out London’s Sebright Arms earlier this year. The band have also just announced a string of live shows including a headline show at London’s Pickle Factory on 18th October and have already performed at festivals Dot-dot and Wild Paths earlier this year. With their debut EP due out in the next few months, 2019 looks set to see Tungz step into the light and so we caught up with them to find out a little more about what does (and doesn’t) make them tick…

Three words to describe our music
Hide the pain.

Last photo on your phone…

The best venue we’ve played…
Our first gig is still the biggest we’ve ever played, at SWX in Bristol. Apparently we were the first band ever to play there. We delivered a 2 hour covers set to a sold-out crowd of completely wasted vet students.

Earliest song you remember…
Ollie: My earliest music memory was in Switzerland with my family. My grandma is Swiss, and her friends were playing the accordion and wooden spoons and yodelling. I remember being totally shy and overwhelmed by the whole thing.

The worst job we’ve ever had…
Rick: Fire alarm warden. I used to sit wearing a high vis jacket all night in case the alarm sounded. The one time it did I was asleep and then got put on performance review.

Favourite food on tour…
Jamie: Pizza is amazing!!!

Our Favourite word…
Screggs (scrambled eggs)

Things that cheer us up…
Each other’s smiling faces.

If we could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Floating on a barge in Venice like Pink Floyd. Then we would take that barge and travel the high seas.

We think you should listen to…
Your heart. And maybe also some Benny Sings.

If we could see anyone play live it would be…
A supergroup made up of every single member of Parliament-Funkadelic from throughout history.

Catch Tungz live at The Pickle Factory on 18th October 2019. ‘My Baby Can Stand Being Alone’ is out now.
