With her debut album Pork released today, we get to know Lebanese-born, Berlin-based experimental artist Thoom In Short.

A visceral ritualism permeates Pork as Thoom’s abrasive, taut arrangements reverberate alongside eerie incantations and spectral vocal resonance. Opening track ‘It’s Going to Be Ablaze’ crackles into life with static droning and cacophonous howls whilst ‘Large Fly’ feels almost demonic in its warped ferocity. Yet this initial intensity makes way for a much more introspective, emotive abstraction that pervades the album and offers a metamorphosis in Thoom’s sound. Throughout the record Thoom purveys a poignant tenderness accentuated by experimental angular utterances; ‘Eat To Taste’ sees ethereal vocals hover atop machine-driven clattering beats and the sparse, haunting melodies of ‘Shaytan’ are pierced with shrill, grating layers of feedback-laden strings.

Born in Lebanon, Thoom attended art school in Chicago and now resides in Berlin; written across all three cities, Pork is informed directly by each of these places and the sense of identity she draws from each.

Pork is released today via Berlin label Career Whore and Thoom will be donating a percentage of the album profits on Bandcamp to disaster relief funds in Beirut.
