Named after an episode of The Twilight Zone, these Brisbane alt-rockers have delivered a confident and enticing second album. Having released debut record Bleeders as a solo-artist, lead singer Thomas Calder recruited four additional hands to help craft Rookie, which has seen the band begin to move away from its folk roots. Polarising between the sound of delicate folk, brooding rock and In Rainbows-era Radiohead, it isn’t a record that should work. But all of the contradictory elements seem to complement each other enough to prevent it from sounding confused, and instead Thomas Calder et al’s brainstorming has resulted in an impressive step forward for the band.
