For their next night, Spectrum Gigs are hosting another amazing line-up for their monthly residency at Strongroom Bar. Ahead of tomorrow’s show, we caught up with The Motion to find out a little more about them.

Crafting atmospheric and dreamy electronica, The Motion purveys a powerful emotional rawness through their songs. The creative moniker of musician, engineer, and producer Penny Churchill, their soundscapes proffer soaring, harmonious vocals alongside hazy, resonant melodies and sparse, emphatic beats. Drawing on personal experiences within their songwriting, Churchill’s musical delivery very much echoes their emotive songwriting as their latest single ‘Sleep Talk’ demonstrates.

The Motion plays Spectrum Gigs’ show tomorrow along with Crispy & Classy and Syrra. Ahead of the gig, get to know The Motion In Short…

“Spectrum is a promotions collective championing music by women, PoC and LGBTQIA+ folx. Gigs are every month at Strongroom bar and are free entry! Interested in playing? Drop us a line at spectrumgigs@gmail.com”.

The best venue I’ve played…

I played at the Shacklewell Arms for a @femaletrouble queer event with my drummer, the room was packed and people were dancing around. This made me so happy to see, it was a great gig with so much love.

Earliest song you remember…

When I was about 6 years old, back on the Isle of Wight, I was cycling around the garden as fast as I could on my blue space themed chopper bike to the song ‘Bicycle Race’ by Queen. I think it was a family BBQ, and I had too much energy to sit and talk.

The worst job I’ve ever had…

Working in a clothing retailer that paid me £3.68 per hour when I was 16, it made me realise how much I didn’t want to do anything other than music – whether that meant making music as an artist or producing and engineering for others.

Favourite food on tour…

Pad Thai and spring rolls + fruit and 2L of water per day ideally. I like to imagine food as fuel. It makes me feel focused and energised. I also love a turmeric Latte.

My Favourite word…

Weird/Gosh

Things that cheer me up…

Bird memes/ oat-ily oat milk decaf flat white/ blondie brownie or matcha brownie to accompany. Shopping for guitar pedals / synths. Bouncing a final mix or session ready for mixing/mastering. Seeing roots eventually grow from plant clippings on the window sill in my flat.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

I’d love the chance to take my music to New York and check out the music scene there.

I think you should listen to…

King Princess, Another Sky, Alaskalaska, ayokay, Sakima, 1975, Hippo Campus.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

David Bowie, I never got to see him play live, I would have loved to experience Bowie’s iconic sound and style.
