Tenterhook // In Short

tenterhook TGE

What a difference a year makes. It was just 12 short months ago that Archie Faulks was setting out his stall as Tenterhook in a basement packed with label scouts at Brighton’s The Great Escape festival.

It was the strength of his tune ‘Stereo’ that turned heads for the 20-year-old Londoner and got tongues wagging. But if you missed him last time, don’t fret. We are proud to announce that Tenterhook will be playing the London in Stereo stage at Great Escape next month. Result.

Given his soulful, gravelly croon it’s not a surprise that Archie’s just been snapped up for the Communion New Faces tour taking place right now, where he will surely be showing off his ace new single, ‘What I Like’.

Produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman), it is a clever jingle with enough latent funk and swirly keyboards to extend his acoustic guitar romp and breathy vocals. Being a sucker for Christmas film, A Wonderful Life, also explains the distinctly romantic vibe which graces the soaring tune.

But before he arrives on the south coast, we caught up with Archie to ask him the tough questions:

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
Ambient, alternative pop

My favourite film ever is…
A Wonderful Life. I’ve watched every year on Christmas Eve since I was 13 and I still cry throughout.

The best venue I’ve played so far is…
A very close run between Kesselhaus in Berlin and Shepherds Bush Empire, both of which I played on tour with Asgeir.

The song I hate the most is…
Gary Numan’s ‘Cars‘. It was my alarm throughout my school days so I associate it with bad times.

The Worst Job I’ve ever had…
I’m lucky that all the jobs I have had so far have been pretty good. I’ve worked behind bars for the past couple of years and really enjoy it. Went through a stage of selling people second hand clothes on eBay, but again that was fun and now know all about postage and clothing sizes.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
Def Leppard or Kiss as I’ve always liked dressing up.

My Favourite word is….
Symmetry

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
Telekanisis – the king of all powers.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
New York City’s Sin-e Cafe

I think you should listen to…
Really into My Brightest Diamond at the moment, check her out. She’s got some catchy songs which have some great sounds and clever arrangements.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
I would like to see The Acid live. Heard their KEXP session and it blew me away.
