Tawiah’s sound is instantly and uniquely captivating, imbued with a rich, soulful warmth. With her debut record Starts Again out today, we caught up with Tawiah to get to know her In Short.

Although Starts Again marks Tawiah’s debut full-length release, over the last decade she’s gathered a wealth of accolades since her debut EP In Jodi’s Bedroom came out. From touring with Moses Sumney to collaborations with the likes of Blood Orange, Cinematic Orchestra and Ghostpoet, the South London artist has very much carved out a reputation for herself with her richly textured, soulful soundscapes.

On Starts Again Tawiah offers personal, intimate expressions of her own identity through shimmering melodies, pared-down beats and distinctive, mesmerising vocals intertwined with avant-garde sensibilities and gospel-infused intonations. Across the ten tracks Tawiah fully confirms exactly why she’s such a revered, acclaimed musician.

With her incredible debut album Starts Again out today, get to know Tawiah In Short…

Three words to describe my music

Personal exploration (of my) identity.

Last photo on your phone…

Soooo I took a picture of the christmas lights on my street, not because I’m gassed for it, but because it’s too soon, lol! The pic before was of the inside of a CP70 electric piano though, a little bit cooler than pre halloween christmas lights!!! I know you didn’t ask for the pic before the last pic… but I’m a generous guy.

Favourite instagram account…

@studio_myrrh spatial artist don, personally a big part of my life and a massive inspiration to me. The only guy I know with no social media, I had to persuade them to get an instagram. It’s beautiful, go follow!

The best venue I’ve played…

I’ve gotta give this one to The Albany, it’s a hidden gem, a community theatre in the heart of Deptford, from the outside it doesn’t look like much but you walk into the theatre and it’s such a beaut. I’m having my debut album launch show there and they have been so supportive. For an independent artist like myself it’s extremely rare to get production rehearsals in the space prior to show day… they offered this to me and it’s been such a game changer!

Earliest song you remember…

“I’m Burning Up” by South African artist Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

The worst job I’ve ever had…

Oh man I worked at ‘Jeans West’ when I was in college and got sacked because I told a customer the jeans she tried on were not a vibe for her!

Favourite food on tour…

Any pasta dish to be fair. Italy is the best place to tour lol.

My Favourite word…

Aforementioned….I’m passive aggressive apparently.

Things that cheer me up..

Sundays… it’s a day to listen to gospel, clean the house and then throw down in the kitchen. Not sure when I became my mother but hey!

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be.

I absolutely love Japan, I’ve played a few shows in Tokyo and Osaka with Mark de Clive Lowe and The Cinematic Orchestra, but I can’t wait to go and share my own music there one day!

I think you should listen to…

Hejira’s album. Thread Of Gold.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

I really need to see Stevie Wonder live.

Tawiah plays Rough Trade East on October 23rd. Starts Again is out now on First Word Records, get the record here.
