Sunfall is the brainchild of some the brightest minds in electronic events. An amalgamation of the teams behind Outlook, Dimensions, XOYO, Phonox and The Nest, this year the festival returns for its second year after a debut which was – save for some unsavoury queuing times – a triumphant success.
The intelligent, ear-to-the-ground programming of Sunfall celebrates the diversity of the music scene in London. The daytime event, taking place in Brockwell Park on Saturday 12th August, will play host to some of the finest underground names across the spectrum of electronic music, many of whom you will rarely have the opportunity to see play out otherwise. This year the focus on providing unparalleled sound for an outdoor event in London remains central to Sunfall’s ethos. Elsewhere on site you’ll find the Knowledge Arena: a hub of talks, interviews, panels and discussions focused around music creation and education. Sunfall’s Independent Record Fair also returns, with live streaming from Peckham’s Balamii Radio and labels like Black Acre, Secretsundaze and Tief Music setting up camp for the day. As the sun falls (!), the party moves from the park to as many as nine late night venues across the capital, revelling in the fact that London’s club culture is very much alive despite constant adversity.
Here’s a handful of the artists we are most looking forward to catching at Sunfall…
Floating Points (Live)
Classically trained Sam Shepherd is a neuroscientist by day and beloved electronic musician by night. His live show, which invites a ten strong orchestral group to the stage, combines instrumentation and machine in seamless harmony. Blurring the lines between sweaty, euphoric dancefloors and smoky jazz clubs, Floating Points’ classical influence and textured compositions result in cathartic live performance.
From Hamburg’s Helena Hauff you can expect a genre bending and vinyl only selection. Her industrial concoction of analogue sounds will be unapologetic and in your face, a melting pot of blistering industrial techno, acid and electro. Her sets are fast paced, high energy and always steeped in nods to the mechanical. After developing her aptitude behind the decks in a long residency at Hamburg club Golden Pudel, Helena Hauff has scaled the ranks to become a favourite amongst dancers and DJs alike.
Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers (Live)
In a U.K. exclusive, Sunfall present a live show from the inimitable Larry Heard. After departing from club land in 2012 as a result of damage to his hearing, last year he returned, playing at Dimensions in his first live performance in over 20 years. Under varying aliases, Larry Heard is responsible for releasing some of the world’s most beloved Chicago house tracks. Expect soul, warmth and unifying euphoria in bucket loads.
One of the biggest producers in the history of hip hop, Madlib aka Beat Conducta aka the undisputed master of beat making has worked with the likes of Erykah Badu, MF DOOM, J Dilla, Ghostface Killah, Kanye and Freddie Gibbs. His DJ sets can be as abstract as his discography is extensive and we can’t wait to see what he will bring to the table at Sunfall.
Afro-Nuyorican Destiny Frasqueri aka Princess Nokia is one of the most important rappers in the game, working to empower with every brave and charismatic move that she makes. Her music fiercely and vibrantly supports the notion of community, freedom of sexuality, individuality, femininity and womanhood and LGBTQIA. Princess Nokia’s lyrics are honest and personal, her performance is brazen and her identity and self-expression is paramount.
