Although the release of Cult Survivor next month marks Sofie’s debut album proper, she’s been hugely active within the electronic music world for quite some time. Best known as a DJ, she also brought the likes of Knxwledge and Mndsgn to Stones Throw during the years she worked at the label. Ahead of her record coming out at the end of June, we caught up with the Vienna-based artist to ask some quickfire questions.

On her dreamy latest single ‘Try to Reach Me’ Sofie crafts blissful, wistful electronica.  With innate poise and serenity, she intertwines hazy, reverb-drenched guitar melodies, shimmering percussion and soft, ethereal vocals drawing on a wealth of influences that inform her songwriting – from 60s’ pop ballads to French chanson and the music of cult experimentalist Gary Wilson. The sonic intricacy of ‘Try to Reach Me’ follows on from the resplendent lo-fi pop of previous single ‘Asleep’, and these first tracks off the record firmly establish her striking songwriting prowess ahead of the full-length release.

Three words to describe my music…
Incantating, honest, dear

The best venue I’ve played…
Mr T’s Bowl in Highland Park back when we were doing the Stones Throw 56 parties, or the Virgil for Dam Funk’s party Funkmosphere!

Earliest song you remember…
I can’t really place it. Probably something classical though, the first thing I actively wanted to relisten to over and over again was Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor after I heard an older student play it at a recital. Also my parents had this cassette of different classic music they had recorded off the radio, that they would have me listen to when I first started playing violin, and about half of the song “Luka” by Suzanne Vega was somehow left on there. I used to replay it so often!

The worst job I’ve ever had…
When I was seventeen I spent a year working technical sales at Microsoft. It made me stop programming.

The thing I most love to cook is…
Persian dishes, though I can never get them like my father’s!

My favourite word…
Pearlescent

A book I love…
Homesick For Another World by Ottessa Mosfegh.

Things that cheer me up…
Gardening, smelling flowers, listening to birds, playing the piano, painting, doing nothing!

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
I’d like to put on my own opera. Jonathan Meese did an incredible rendition of Wagner’s Parsifal. So, extremely vast shot in the dark but — if any opera house decides to read this — please do write me!

I think you should listen to…
Arthur has a new album out, called “Hair of the Dog”. It’s glorious. Also RIP Swirl’s new EP “Hope U Are Well”. And anything Lauren Auder!

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
Gary Wilson
