An undeniably prolific artist, Sad13 is the moniker of Sadie Dupuis also known for her music as Speedy Ortiz. With her sophomore record Haunted Painting out this September, we caught up with Sad13 to talk pitbulls, Pom Pom Squad and her fave dish to cook.

This week she released the potent and resonant ‘Oops…!’, the second track from her upcoming record. Fuzzy, vibrant guitar riffs meld with sauntering melodies and eerie, otherworldly instrumental flourishes as Dupuis delivers her distinctly dulcet and defiant vocals with crystalline assurance. Reflecting the situation and processing Dupuis details below, ‘Oops…!’ is ardently empowered, crafted with her ever-incisive, playful wit and aptitude for compellingly catchy melodies.

“We recorded “Oops…!” at New Monkey, which was Elliott Smith’s studio. This one has a magic drum sound – thanks entirely to engineer Sarah Tudzin (of Illuminati Hotties notoriety), and Zoë Brecher’s impeccable playing. Just before writing it, on tour with CHVRCHES, a venue employee became physically and verbally violent with one of my Speedy Ortiz bandmates. He directed his fake apology at me instead of the person he harmed, presumably because I am smaller and present feminine. My vengeance complex kicked in and I got a scary adrenaline high making sure this unsafe person was removed from the show. While I’m glad I have protective instincts, I wrote the song to process ways in which I’ve used people’s assumptions about me and my body to wield my own version of toxic masculinity. Kimber-Lee Alston, who directed remotely via Zoom, turned this story and song into an allegory about a 1950s prom queen vampire who lures in her bad boy victims with delicious, blood-filled treats.”

Get to know Sad13 In Short…

Three words to describe my music…

Cute phantom shredding.

Last photo on your phone…

I was hoping it’d be a picture of a dog or a stupid outfit but instead it’s this timely representation of our world, sigh. $1/sale of my album is benefitting Prevention Point Philadelphia, so this is a good excuse to shout them out! Vital harm reduction and medical resources in my home city of Philadelphia, PA.

Favourite instagram account…

@gummythepit is a current favorite dog account. A very cute, very pink doggy eating whipped cream, dreaming, trying on outfits, being perfect. Instagram recently figured out it should only show me pitbulls in the feed and as a pitbull parent/enthusiast, it’s the best thing to happen to me on that app.

The best venue I’ve played…

Best is hard to choose, especially when nostalgia for touring and so many venues closing has me reminiscing about different places every day. Like, I could say Glastonbury or I could say a flower shop basement and both would be true. Today I’m especially missing Cheer Up Charlie’s in Austin. Playing on an outdoor stage in beautiful Texas weather at a queer-centered club that serves kombucha cocktails and has a backyard food truck serving vegan burgers and tacos is my idea of heaven.

Earliest song you remember…

The worst job I’ve ever had…

After a couple years of veganism, I thought I could stomach working in the kitchen of a pizza restaurant. Turns out handling raw meat was not happening for me without overwhelming nausea and I did not make it past training. (Luckily, I got hired by a video rental store, my all-time best job.)

The thing I most love to cook is…

Spicy garlic eggplant with sichuan peppercorns.

A book I love…

Homie by Danez Smith

Things that cheer me up…

New books, eating a whole pot of homemade queso, Jeopardy, when people hide little figurines in their gardens, lapsang souchong.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

CDMX, my favorite city in the world that I’m always looking for excuses to visit.

I think you should listen to…

Pom Pom Squad (wearing their long sleeve tee right now, it’s about 90 degrees F, that’s how hard I go for Pom Pom Squad).

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Yves Tumor
