Wichita // June 3rd

Spectrals (Louis Jones to his friends) fluttered into shot a couple of years ago boasting an array of cannily selected archival influences and a devotion to antiquity not seen since The Libertines’ prime. Likeable debut ‘Bad Penny’ channelled those doo-wop/garage pop/Rat Pack nods with some heart, but this follow-up is but a pale facsimile of his own past efforts. Jones’ confoundingly affected Edwyn Collins croon is thrust so high in the mix that it overpowers even the occasional good eggs (‘Karaoke’, ‘Limousine’), while the torturous drabcore nadir of ‘Friend Zone’ is unfortunately representative of an album fundamentally devoid of inspiration.
