Not Mathematics
Fear of Fiction //

Even at just five tracks, ‘Not Mathematics’ proves quite the statement-of-intent: ‘Balancing Act’ eschews slow-burning contemplation, and instead compresses angst and joy into an astonishing two minutes of rapturous post-rock swells, with the snapping vocals of Mark Juggins recalling the likes of Saddle Creek angries Desaparecidos. Meanwhile, standout number, ‘Like Whistles’ hits a collaged sweet spot, led by an anthemic space-organ sound owing to bassist Jed Hampson’s Ira Wolf Tuton style modulation. So while, indeed, this may not be mathematics it remains a clever, tangential record, boasting a vast and complex topography.
