On Beneath The Eyrie, the Pixies have left their surfboards hanging in the garage and gone for a walk in the woods. Sometimes those woods sound like a glorious place to light fires and pitch tents, sometimes those woods sound like they’re shadowy and sinister. In true Pixies style, tracks are diverse. They could soundtrack anything from a cowboy bromance (‘Daniel Boone’) to a rebellious road movie (‘Long Rider’).
When Laurence Binyon wrote, “Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,” it sprang from far more heroic life-and-death shit than rock ‘n’ roll, but there’s no better phrase to sum up the irresistible form demonstrated on the Pixies’ latest release. How an album can sound so 1989 and so 2019 at once is remarkable.
