18 year old Suffolk based newcomer Oscar Welsh today reveals stellar new single Sixteen, an intricately crafted left-pop cut from an artist already turning a lot of heads. Crafted in his bedroom, the sun-bleached track showcases Oscar’s dreamy vocals over rolling beats to create a must-listen offering from a surefire artist to watch this year. Speaking on Sixteen, Oscar Welsh states:

‘Sixteen is a song about a tense relationship which lasted from early teens to adulthood. I guess it just illustrates the frustration an individual has when an admirer doesn’t know when to stop chasing.’

Inspired by Stevie Wonder, Oscar Welsh builds tracks from his Suffolk base from life experiences.  Sixteen is the next step in what looks set to be a big year for Oscar Welsh.
Hey Oscar, how are you? How have you found lockdown?

Lockdown and the current climate with the civil unrest around the world with riots etc has got me feeling down, but nonetheless I’m feeling positive about releasing music, to try and spread some positivity in this time.

We are loving your new song ‘Sixteen’ – How would you describe it?
Sixteen is a song about frustration with a past lover. A teen romance which turns sour, illustrated with an uptempo beat and a catchy melody.
Your music has picked up a great reception thus far – has it been how you expected?
Noooo definitely not what I expected, I just wanted to get over 1000 plays when I started this all off, so to be in this situation is so amazing.
Who would you describe as your main influences?

Stevie Wonder is definitely one of my main influences. My car (fiat panda) doesn’t have a Bluetooth and even the radio doesn’t work very well so I play CD’s of old artists I can dig up in my parents’ piles of old stuff. This has led to me playing Stevie Wonder albums such as Talking Book and Songs in the Key of Life instead of listening to what most young people listen to. I think he’s a genius, and almost every day I’ll spend a few minutes trying to learn how to play his songs. I also like a lot of smaller artists who just like me are trying to make it right now. For example Remi Wolf is one of my favourites, as well as Monsune, and also artists such as Thomas Headon who are innovating the music scene with tik tok and cult-ish social media followings.

We read you make all your tunes in your Suffolk bedroom – are you planning any collaborations any time soon?

Yes I’m not really collaborating at the moment, zoom doesn’t really agree with my weak rural Suffolk WiFi. But I am featuring on an upcoming song with JYLPO and A5H, and I’m always making beats with the hope to send to some of my favourite artists that will hopefully open my dm’s one day
What is coming next for Oscar Welsh?
After Sixteen, my final track (‘Drift’) from my debut EP (‘Vernal’) will be released. I chose the name Vernal for the debut EP because it’s the Latin name given to spring equinox and so represents birth, youth, vitality and the start of something. This is just the start, expect more from me.
