Oh! Gunquit! // In Short

unnamed_opt

Combining Surf, Exotica, Garagepunk, 50’s R&B and Twisted Freak-a-Billy, Oh! Gunquit are one of the most interesting and unique London musical acts of the last couple of years. The nucleus of the band started in 2010 when neighbours Tina Swasey (lead vox/trumpet) and Simon Wild (guitars/vox) met frequenting a Camden DJ cellar club.  Evolving into a five-piece, Oh! Gunquit put out a couple of 7″ singles before releasing their debut full-length, Eat Yuppies and Dance on Dirty Water Records.

The album is a superb showcase of frenetic guitars, pounding snare drums, vibrant exotic sounds and kitsch humour that catapults you into a world of B-Movie adventures.

If I had to describe our music in 3 words, I’d use…
Rumble-Bop Trash

My favourite film ever is…
SIMON: Midnight Cowboy
TINA: Meet the Feebles

The most famous person I’ve met is…
SIMON: I guess depending in what circles, but Courtney Love who was quite demure at first, then 5 minutes later proceeded to jump on the bar and give the finger to everyone. It was pretty fun.

TINA: I once mistook Brian May’s white 80’s Nike shoe for my purse and squeezed it a few times until I realised it was actually attached to Brian May.

The best venue I’ve played so far is…
A sprawling wild cemetery in Whitechapel for Danny Boyle’s Shuffle Festival, a bar in Antwerp full of wild dockers, & Molotow in Hamburg….

The song I hate the most is…
TINA: Happy Birthday, I really like singing and playing it for other people but I get embarrassed when people sing it to me.
SIMON: Anything with a vocoder, autotune, and one of those mic/mouth-tube/guitar things, that goes wurgh wurgh ooohwurgh.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
TINA: Hmmm – not sure if there is such thing as a bad job when you’re trying to earn some bread starting out. The most unsavoury job I had was being a cocktail waitress at a strip club. One time I had a go at doing ‘foxy boxing’, i.e. a boxing punch up with a stripper for entertainment. I was a bit of a ringer and had loads of experience boxing, and boy was that stripper unhappy about losing. I walked away with a cool $500 and a bruised ego for stooping so low – the things you do when repaying student debt I tell ya!
SIMON: Surely enough for a short (boring?) book. Industrial cleaning in a empty pigeon-shit infested warehouse where the pinnacle was trying to patch a hole in the roof where seagulls were nesting, armed only with a broom as protection from avian attack. Also at a Kipling cake factory with a major jam and cream incident, making trophies out of bits of golden plastic for amateur sports teams,  etc etc etc… boohoo. But hey, weren’t down the mine right?

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
TINA: An all-male version of The Slits called The Pricks.
SIMON: Poo Reed & the Velvet Underpants.

My favourite word is…
TINA: Nowadays it is ‘Dang!’
SIMON: Dinglebert

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
SIMON: Only part-time.
TINA: I totally thought I figured out this one before and had it in my head… errmm… Rewind selector… I’m going to go with regenerative body parts, give ’em to people that need ’em and what party tricks could be had eh?

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Chislehurst Caves or any kinda Cave and maybe Atlantis..

I think you should listen to…
Bands that are playing now: Dead Coast, Severed Limb, The NightBeats, Abjects, The Nuns, The Mentalettes, King Khan & the Shrines, Phobophobes, MFC Chicken, King Salami, Sick Hyenas….

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
At their height: Fela Kuti, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bo Diddley, Sly & the Family Stone, The Cramps, Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band, The Fugs, Little Richard, MC5, Sun-Ra, Talking Heads, Crass, Tina & Ike Turner, Lavern Baker, Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson, The Sonics, The Kinks, Davy Graham, Stiff Little Fingers, The Monks, The Ventures, Ramones
