Let’s say you were going to Field Day this weekend. You’d be spoiled for choice, right? You might easily be tempted to spend the whole day watching the competitive eating contests. While others might delight in hearing London grime legend Skepta shutdown Victoria Park. The choice is yours.

But if you’re looking to expand your musical horizons in Hackney, look no further than Saturday’s set from POND frontman Nicholas Allbrook. Having just dropped his second album Pure Gardiya less than a fortnight ago, the Aussie musical legend is riding high with his unadulterated and wild pop tunes. Think Meilyr Jones meets Nick Cave in a hash bar and you’re in the right galaxy.

Case in point his brain-scrambling tune Advance with its bizarre refrain of: “The sailor / The whaler / Norman Mailer / Don’t belong in town.” It’s incredible stuff – combined with more than a whiff of David Bowie’s much-missed theatricality and powerful hook-laden songwriting. The literary references continue on fellow standout track, A Fool There Was, which takes its name from the stage adaption of Rudyard Kipling’s poem, The Vampire.

According to Nicholas, the album is ‘an exercise in self-reflection’ for the Perth multi-instrumentalist, as he ruminates on his ‘Australian roots’. In a highly coded and elliptical way, perhaps, but don’t expect worthy navel-gazing as his simultaneously creepy and uplifting songs are truly in a world of their own. And even more refreshing is the way he writes such purposeful lines for all of the instruments to expand his twisting, epic tunes.

If you can’t wait until Saturday for his set, you can rock up at The Courtyard Theatre in Hoxton tomorrow night (June 9th) for what promises to be a special headline set. Either way, make sure you catch him in action. We were curious to find out a bit more about what makes Nicholas tick, so we asked him the burning questions. Just don’t tell him he’s famous…
