It should come as no surprise that Nate Brenner – aka Naytronix – has crafted an album rich with texture and sonic oddities, all tidily packaged up and spotlessly presented. Just like his beloved lamb chops at Whitechapel restaurant Tayyabs (read his Tales of the City here), Brenner serves up a listen that is deep in flavour and has the power to genuinely shock if you roll your sleeves up and get stuck in.

He’s also the other half of the legendary tUnE-yArDS. Whether he’s the upper case or lower case letters, I have no idea. But the American bass master has certainly and beautifully set out his stall on his second solo album, Mister Divine. Which means that his forthcoming – and stupendously free! – show at the Shacklewell Arms on Saturday (November 28th) is a must.

After spending the last seven years playing second fiddle to singer Merrill Garbus on the joyous and disorientating roller coaster that has become the tUnE-yArDS experience, Brenner has managed to find another voice entirely for his solo album on label City Slang. And that voice is slow and warm, with a hint of angular electronica mixed with an Arthur Russell-esque love of the bass clef all rolled up with some blissed out percussion.

Throughout Mister Divine, an arsenal of bright percussion underpins Brenner’s tranquil vocals, complete with flickering synth sounds and driving hooks courtesy of his weapon of choice, the bass guitar. Just take his soulful tune Back in Time, which Brenner describes as: “Reminiscing about the good old days. Wanting to go back to a simpler time, but of course you can’t turn back the clock… and maybe it wasn’t so simple then either? I wanted the song to have a relaxed feel to it but with a nice forward moving pulse.”

It’s a peach of an album and we should all be very curious what Brenner will serve up on the Dalston stage on Saturday. Whatever it is, there will surely be a hint of his beloved Kraftwerk – but you can read all about his love of the Dusseldorf giants, his meeting with Yoko Ono and his curiosity about a Beethoven live set when we asked the tough questions, below…
