The Great Escape festival in Brighton is known for its fresh faces and sea breeze. But most importantly, it’s the annual make-or-break launch pad for young songwriters and bands as they seek to turn heads.

If nothing else, the May 19-21 festival marks a big first for Sydney artist Jamie Timony (aka Mossy). It’s his first-ever gig in the UK and it will come just days after he releases his self-titled debut EP.

Is he fazed? Well, it doesn’t appear so as he’s already had a taste of the limelight with his oddball pop tune ‘Electric Chair’ and the subsequent video directed by Kris Moyes (Grizzly Bear, Beck, Sia, The Rapture). He tells me that the otherworldly track was inspired by the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo. The video also features a pretty fucking king-sized spider.

He recorded the EP during a sojourn to New York City, which at night saw him required him to sleep on a blow-up mattress in a basement studio in the Lower East Side. But it was all worth it after it was produced by Dean Tuza and David Kahne (The Strokes, Paul McCartney), with a helping hand from engineer Stuart White (Beyonce, Jay Z). And thankfully, no arachnids were reported harmed in the process.

“Stuart was in the studio next door to us and we became friends,” Jamie says casually. “He’d pop into the studio to find out what we’re up to and he was enjoying what we were doing.”

Like I said, he’s not fazed. Because although music was his first love, he’s also made a name for himself in critically acclaimed stage plays, in feature films alongside the likes of Geoffrey Rush and Willem Dafoe, and been pretty successful in the visual arts.

But before he starts to make you feel like your life is going nowhere and you should get the hell off that stinking sofa, he also let slip that he’s worked as a burger boy in a bad restaurant. True? Just read on to find out…
