At times reminiscent of Majical Cloudz and early White Lies, the dark-wave electronica of Moaning’s new material marks a distinct shift in sound for the LA trio whilst still maintaining and blending with their distinctive, dark post-punk sensibilities. With their new album out today, we caught up with them to talk Bernie Sanders, gummy bears and Nirvana.

The new album sees Moaning lean into more of a synth-heavy sound, with the infectious beats and oscillating, brooding melodies of the first single, and also first track on the record, ‘Ego’ setting the tone for the expansive, emotive sonic trip of Uneasy Laughter. An album that fully expresses the anxieties and complexities of existence in the 21st century, ‘Make It Stop’ builds an atmosphere of ominous, claustrophobic intensity with droning distortion that is cut by the jangling riffs and pounding rhythms of the refrain as vocalist Sean Solomon repeatedly cries “make it stop”. Whilst latest single ‘Connect the Dots’ is a slick, shimmering slice of soaring electronica.

Speaking on the album’s direction and personal growth that fuelled this, Solomon expresses, “I did a lot of reading in the tour van — authors like bell hooks, Mark Fisher, and Alain de Botton, all really inspired me. I don’t want to be the person who influences young people to go get high and become cliche tragic artists,” he says. “What I’d rather convey to people is that they’re not alone in what they think and how they feel. ‘Ego’ specifically and the album overall is about those themes — letting go of your bullshit so you can help other people and be present.”
