Ahead of releasing his new EP Beloved later this month, we caught up with Miles From Kinshasa to talk five tracks that have influenced him.

Following on from the resplendent and tender ‘Wearing Smiles’, his latest single ‘Lookin’ 4 U’ sees the Congo-born, London-based artist further expand his soulful and smooth sound. His suave, melodious vocals blend with sultry, pared-down grooves and warm, breezy melodies making for an intimate, shimmering track.

Speaking on the track Miles expresses “It’s probably my favourite song on the whole project; it just sounds like something from the Donkey Kong video game soundtrack, whilst documenting how I’m perceived to navigate relationships from my viewpoint.”

Get to know Miles From Kinshasa In Five…

Jai Paul – All Night

He’s the best, that’s it. Nobody can create a world the way Jai Paul does; many have copied but it pales in comparison. The year his leaked album came out I listened to it all summer, all my demos even started to sound like his haha, he’s pure genius.

Beach House – Better Times

My close friend put me on to this song and it opened up a whole new soundscape to explore. I understand the comparisons to the Cocteau Twins but Beach House are something else. I feel like every film should have at least one Beach House song as part of the soundtrack.

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams

If a song was ever 10/10 it would be this, the backstory to this song and album just makes it even better. I wish I could have heard it when it first came out, it’s literally perfect. Songwriting may never be this good but I try to have this as one of the benchmarks for great songwriting.

Letta Mbulu – Nomalizo

South Africans have too much sauce, it’s effortless. I remember hearing South African gospel songs on Sunday mornings. This song sounds like a mix of those vibes and synth pop, with jazz somewhere in there too, gorgeous.

Rema – Iron Man

Dumebi is probably the song that people would know him for the most, but Iron Man is otherworldly for me. I wouldn’t have written one of the songs on my upcoming EP if I hadn’t come across this. I love artists that have their own wave and Rema is one of them.

‘Beloved’ is released on August 27th.
