As LORYN releases her luscious debut EP today, we caught up with her to talk Audrey Nuna, her worst job and Sunday roasts.

Strikingly raw and melodious, Less Is More offers a captivating introduction to LORYN’s swelling, considered pop. Reminiscent at points of Lorde’s potent emotive pop, on Less Is More LORYN crafts vibrant, warm soundscapes that soar gracefully, fuelled by shimmering minimal electronica and LORYN’s rich, expressive vocals.

Speaking on the release LORYN says, I think we all have a lot of pretty f***ing big emotional elephants in rooms sometimes and I’m loving chatting to mine at the moment. I don’t think we say directly enough what is going on in our heads. But these songs allow me to have a direct mouth. For me I’m not necessarily writing and singing songs, I’m just saying how it is.”

Get to know LORYN In Short…

Last photo on your phone…

It’s a pic of a monstera plant that I have looking very sad and wilted. I seem to kill every plant that I’ve ever had so I’m trying really hard to save this one. I took a photo to send to my mom for advice.

Favourite instagram account…

@thehomedit because it makes my OCD real happy
@kanyedoingthings because it’s kayne doing things…
@bertiethepom just go look at it now and you’re welcome.

The best venue I’ve played…

I performed at Carnegie hall when I was in high school… thinking back on it that was so crazy but I don’t really think I realised the magnitude of that performance until later on in life.

Earliest song you remember…

The lion sleeps tonight.

The worst job I’ve ever had…

When I was sixteen I was employed to run kids birthday parties at a Recreation centre in Vancouver. It was my job to plan all the activities and make sure that each kid had the best birthday ever. In theory a very fun job, but in reality you have thirty kids all hopped up on sugar, running around screaming, parents micromanaging, children going missing, cool-aid spilling, cake throwing etc… There was this one birthday party where the birthday boy literally attacked another boy at the party and this poor kid had a chunk of hair ripped out of his head. The parents of course blamed me (fair) and I had to explain why this had happened… but of course there was no explanation other than that your kids are little shits and need help. Needless to say I only worked there for that summer.

The thing I most love to cook is…

Since I moved to England I’ve honed that art of the Sunday roast and now when I go back to Canada my friends and family joke that it’s the only thing I know how to cook but it isn’t I can also make scrambled eggs.

My Favourite word…

My mom says I have a potty mouth so it would be a swear word of some kind. whichever suits the occasion really.

A book I love…

The chimp paradox, this book changed a lot of things for me.

Things that cheer me up…

I think you should listen to…

Audrey Nuna cos she’s sick.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Probably the toughest questions to answer because the list is soooo big but it’s gotta be Carol King at the top for me.
