Being co-signed by Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and Halle Berry is a pretty big deal, but then rapidly rising newcomer Kierra Luv is a big deal. Having garnered acclaim for a series of viral freestyles, today she releases her much-anticipated debut mixtape Take It Or Leave It. We caught up with the young Pennsylvanian rapper to talk her clothing line, mac and cheese, and Coachella.

From start to finish Take It Or Leave It brings the heat unrelentingly. Opening track ‘Work It Out’ sees Kierra Luv come straight in with her raw, hard bars over skittering samples, exuding empowering self-assurance. Across the EP Kierra’s versatility is fully on display as one minute she serves hard-hitting verses and the next silky soft vocals, switching between with the slickest delivery. Kierra’s vocals are matched by heady hip-hop beats and smooth instrumentals. ‘Run Away’, featuring fellow Puerto Rican artist iann dior, fully demonstrates this dexterity as melancholic guitar refrains and brooding trap beats provide the backdrop for Kierra to flit between the emotive, softly-sung chorus and strident, fiery bars alongside iann dior’s emo-tinged flow.

On ‘Don’t I’ Kierra spits “I make this thing look too easy” and she really does, demonstrating her inimitable skill and insight with seemingly effortless finesse. At just 18 years Kierra Luv is already making a name for herself amongst contemporary hip-hop’s greatest and she’s only just getting started.
