There’s a vibrant, cinematic quality to the sounds on Katie Von Schleicher’s new record, offering a distinct sonic evolution from the lo-fi power ballads of her impressive debut Shitty Hits. With Consummation out tomorrow, we caught up with her to talk 80s interiors, plants and some top-tier photo content from her phone.

On Consummation, the NYC-based artist offers a deeply personal exploration of trauma and across the tracks draws inspiration, in part, from an alternative interpretation of Hitchcock’s Vertigo – looking at the underlying subtext of abuse within the film. On stand-out single ‘Wheel’ the melancholic lyrics are in stark contrast to the buoyant harmonic blend of jaunty guitars, uptempo rhythms and Von Schleicher’s light, ethereal vocals. This delicate emotive balance is something that Von Schleicher excels at as she crafts warm, shimmering tracks that range from brooding electronic tones of ‘Brutality’ to the luscious, theatrical crooning of ‘Strangest Thing’ or the potent vulnerability of ‘Gross’, whilst her wistful lyrics deal with issues of emotional weight and poignancy.

Get to know Katie Von Schleicher In Short…

Three words to describe my music…

big, fuzzy, lush

Last photo on your phone…

The last is a meme:
The last one I took is this woman pushing her dog in a stroller:

Favourite instagram account…

@the_80s_interior – Never realized how badass the 80’s were for design.

The best venue I’ve played…

Trafo in Jena, Germany. It’s a former power plant. Apparently Hegel wrote The Phenomenology of Spirit in Jena, and Martin Luther crashed once at the hotel they put us up in. It’s gorgeous in the venue, royal blue chairs, modern lighting hanging, surrounded by concrete, very roomy.

Earliest song you remember…

Poor Wandering One from the musical Pirates of Penzance (on cassette).

The worst job I’ve ever had…

Working at a restaurant called The Bedford in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (it’s somehow still open!). The boss/owner was an alcoholic who liked to sexualize and then demean us verbally. He bought his friends some cocaine, got drunk, and fired me at 2am on my last shift at the end of my two weeks’ notice.

The thing I most love to cook is…

Risotto! Within the format there’s a lot of possibility.

My Favourite word…

Hardest question so far. Lately I’ve liked the word devotion. Also gloaming, empyreal, haemorrhage, pseudo-event. In French: degueulasse. In Portuguese: saudade. In German: ungebildet.

A book I love…

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men by James Agee.

Things that cheer me up…

Plants, games of any kind, weird bdsm memes my friends text me pertaining to the coronavirus.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

A kitschy resort motel in the desert, a destination venue where the band plays a residency for 5 days straight. This place doesn’t exist, to my knowledge. The stage would be in the corner of a strange dining room with red carpet and red velvet curtains and would feel like a posh 60’s Holiday Inn.

I think you should listen to…

Dirges by the Eureka Brass Band

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Nina Simone
