Scala // 23rd October
Antipodean outfit Jagwar Ma released their blissed out album Howlin’ earlier this year and like The Naked and Famous before them have successfully cornered London’s Aussie market, selling out the respectably sized Scala with ease. Packed to the rafters doesn’t quite explain it. Now, we should have got the idea that this gig was not going to be a nice hazy autumnal soundscape when the warm up DJ near deafened us with New Order turned up so loud that the bass peaked and our ears bled for half an hour, but the truly laughable Madchester mockery that was the Jagwar Ma show was completely unexpected. Front man Gabriel Winterfield bounding on stage with Ian Brown mannerisms, in sportswear and a floppy Kangol hat, was just one of the painful comparisons, as the singles “Come Save Me” and “Man I Need” and album tracks alike were bashed out of sub-woofers that would have made Goldie jealous. We couldn’t help but wonder why this rehashed Hacienda homage was necessary on a Wednesday night and where the nice dreamy album that had serviced so many summer hangovers had gone. If you are tempted to check them out on their next London jaunt, take heed and take earplugs.
