With everything she does, iyla exudes a strong creative identity and confidence. Last year the LA artist and activist, who’s on the Youtube Music US Foundry programme, released her debut EP War + Raindrops to great acclaim and has just dropped a visually stunning, vibrant visual accompaniment to her track ‘Flowers’. We caught up with iyla to find out a little more about the rising artist.

Imbued with a rich soulful essence, her sound blends R&B and pop intertwined with honeyed vocals. Speaking on her creations she says, “When people think of iyla, I want them to think of art. With everything I do – my music, my vocals, my videos and my stage performances – I really want people to feel like they’re experiencing art.” And her latest video, accompanying the track ‘Flowers’ taken from her debut, very much evidences this creative potency and integrity with which she approaches everything. A gloriously floral, colourful creation and a great introduction to iyla’s sound and aesthetic if you’re not yet acquainted.

Having just released the vibrant new video for ‘Flowers’, we caught up with iyla to find out a little more about the rising pop-star. Get to know iyla In Short…

Favourite instagram account… @lalamilan she cracks me up!

The best venue I’ve played… A tie between YouTube Space London, and Lightbox, NYC.

My Favourite word… Blue

Things that cheer me up… My dog Violet, singing with my family, dm-ing supporters, watching YouTube vids, ice cream, and all things Autumn.

I think you should listen to…  Whatever music makes you feel most connected with your feelings. Not based on “genre” or what your friends think is cool or not. I’ve been listening to a lot of H.E.R. lately.

If I could see anyone play live it would be… Rihanna
