Algerian 5-piece Imarhan return with their second full length, bringing with them a more colourful arsenal of sounds and leaving their desert-blues origins on the periphery.
Opening track and lead single ‘Azzaman’ bears funk and even Italo disco influences in the percussion, while ‘Ehad Wa Dagh’ pushes the group’s impressive musicianship to the fore. There’s certainly a broader remit throughout and the songs promise a breathless live show, but; and perhaps it’s a consequence of this, it’s the quieter moments that standout. The elegiac ‘Tarha-nam’ and campfire folk of ‘Zinizjumegh’ are high points. Either way, this is a band whose name will creep higher and higher up on 2018’s festival bills.
