Hovvdy’s tender, poignant songwriting holds a uniquely comforting and warming space. Each new release from the Austin, Texas duo feels something like spending time with a close friend, evoking that particular kind of magic. With their new track ‘I’m Sorry’ released this week, we caught up with Hovvdy to talk tacos, Sparklehorse and listening recommendations.

Taking their sound into gracefully celestial and shimmering dream-pop realms, ‘I’m Sorry’ feels at once cavernous in its lofty etherealism whilst being rooted in an intricate intimacy. Gently undulating with soft, echoing vocal harmonies, crystalline, tinkering drum beats, and twinkling melodies, the track captures a bittersweet serenity. Akin to their previous releases the duo, comprised of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, craft this extraordinary emotivity that is innately peaceful and heartening even when their lyrics grapple with more melancholic introspection. Each track from Hovvdy feels like recalling a joyous and special memory whilst being fully aware of the moment’s ephemerality, ultimately proffering a gentle beauty.

Of the new single, Taylor expresses “‘I’m Sorry’ is about the mixed emotions when a relationship has to change or end. Grief and relief. We were excited to pull the guitars back to let the vocals and ambient textures shine. The clank and swing of the programmed drums create a resonance and energy that brings it all together.”
