Hollie Cook shares with us her ‘No Sun No Fun’ playlist featuring Cameo, Cardi B, Stefflon Don and more.
Having cut her teeth as a member of iconic female punk band The Slits between 2005 and 2010, Hollie Cook has gone on to release three solo albums. The most recent, Vessel of Love, was released in January 2018 via Merge Records, the label also home to the likes of Arcade Fire, Caribou, and Neutral Milk Hotel.
A collection of reggae-flavoured love songs peppered with pop lyricism, Vessel of Love swings along, carried by Cook’s honeyed and oft-weightless vocal. The album has been created with Youth, co-producer behind The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’, and Hollie’s band General Roots, that have been touring with her for a number of years. With an October headline tour incoming, featuring some of her biggest headline shows to date at venues like Scala and Brighton’s Concorde 2, Hollie prepares for the next slew of shows with a sold out evening at Camden’s Jazz Café under her belt.
Ahead of a myriad of 2018 festival shows including last weekend’s Beat Herder, Kendal Calling, Lee Fest and Festival No. 6, we asked Hollie Cook to build a playlist for us, inspired by her mantra for festival season: no sun, no fun! In Hollie’s own words…
“I’m very lucky and excited to be playing a host of great festivals around the UK and Europe this year, so I made this playlist of all the artists I’m excited to party with/to over the next few months.
There’s some great tunes that I’m particularly enjoying at the moment, from artists like Chronixx (literally on every playlist I make), Stefflon Don, Baloji and bands like The Go! Team, Sinkane, and Superfood which never fail to sound great in the sunshine! Welcome to my No Fun No Sun festival mixtape… x”
Vessel of Love is out now.
