Falling Stacks // In Short

Falling Stacks

Are you a fan of Shellac, The Jesus Lizard and Fugazi? If the answer is ‘yes’, then don’t miss this trio from Bristol. Falling Stacks (a.k.a. Gavin on vocals, James on drums and Matt on bass) make experimental, avant-garde noise within traditional, solid song structures. There is something familiar in their punchy, abrasive, desperation-filled vocals (think Munch’s The Scream), their scatty, at times syncopated rhythms and their twangy guitars, but at the same time their music sounds genuinely unique.

Following three acclaimed EPs, their debut album No Wives is out now via Battle Worldwide Recordings.

If I had to describe our music in 3 words, I’d use…

…someone else’s words: Uptight. Joyless. Good.

My favourite film ever is…
JAMES – Unavailable on Netflix

The most famous person I’ve met is…

JAMES – I showed Martin Keown around a building once. I resisted the temptation to shout right in his face. He loves all that, but it would’ve been unprofessional.
GAVIN – When I worked at BBC television centre I once found Colin Greenwood walking aimlessly around the basement looking for the Radiohead dressing room, so I showed him the way.
MATT- Met Lennox Lewis at a charity football match once. He was terrible at football. Really awful.

The song I hate the most is…
J – What’s that one on every advert about being with your friends, that was clearly written to try and get placed on yoghurt adverts? That one.
G – There are many, but Katrina & The Waves “Walking on Sunshine” makes me aggressive…
M – Practically anything by Queen. God I hate them.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
G- for a couple of summers whilst at university I worked as a bin man – not a career I’d want to pursue but for me at that time the money was really good…

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
J – Probably a Lemonheads covers band. Would call it Evan Dand-faux
M – Mansun tribute, called Fake It Easy Chicken.

My favourite word is…

J – …a swear word.
G – I pretentiously talk about “value”, and not in a monetary context, most of my day (I work in Marketing you see)…
M – Quadrat. Or cohesion.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…

J – A second drum beat. With really cool fills.
M – Super throwing. Just being able to throw things really far. Like miles.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
J – Some sort of castle by the sea in Sicily please.
G – Any gig where someone else carries and sets up the stuff…
M – Scandinavia somewhere – I think they’d like us.

I think you should listen to…
J – The new Swervedriver album. It’s better than all those current bands that sound a bit like Swervedriver.
M – Not new, but Unwound. Always seem to be under appreciated to me.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

J- Right now, right this second, I only want to see Metz.
G- If it’s one of those, wish you’d seen questions, then Nirvana or Elvis – if it’s now then I’d agree with J and say METZ. We saw them three times in three months about 18 months ago and they were unstoppable.
M – Tom Waits. I contemplated spending £200+ to see him when he was over here in the past few years but decided it was too much money. Because it is too much money.
