Ahead of her performance at this year’s The Great Escape, we caught up with rising pop artist Emily Burns to find out what makes her tick…

It’s one month today until our favourite Brighton weekend! Today team TGE have announced a hundred more artists and the full schedule complete with gig planner (start making your POA here). Our pick of the additions include Rosie Lowe, Object Blue, Black Honey, Sharda, Lorenzo Senni, and a Kiwi Records takeover at Patterns with Conducta and up-and-comer Mind of a Dragon.

But over to today’s artist feature – rising pop starlet Emily Burns. “You’re so sweet, like peach iced tea. It kind of makes me sick”, she sings in latest single ‘Too Cool’. With a sugary vocal, catchy hooks and crisp pop production, 24 year old Emily sings with a candid honesty about love, heartache, and that all-too-familiar feeling of picking fights because things are going strangely well.

2019 has seen Emily on her first tour of the UK, before jetting off to Asia for a string of shows over there too. Emily grew up in the Midlands listening to the likes of TLC, Usher and Amy Winehouse, and her own vibrant pop has been compared to the likes of Tove Lo and Sigrid. Now based in London, Emily’s MO is songs that sound bright and breezy, but lyrically they’re introspective and often painful.

Ahead of her performance at The Great Escape, get to know Emily Burns In Short…

Three words to describe my music…
Story-telling by song.

Last photo on your phone…
This is really cool actually. I’m in Shanghai at the moment, on the fourth stop of my Asian tour. So the last photo on my phone is a picture of Nanjing Road – we went there to do some shopping earlier. It was insane.

Favourite Instagram account…
I am in love with @musiccitymemes – it’s genuinely hilarious.

The best venue I’ve played…
I supported Tove Styrke at Heaven last year and it was crazy. I loved Heaven already, for obvious reasons but, this night was next level.

Earliest song you remember…
My Mum always used to sing ‘You Are My Sunshine’ to me when I was little. It’s my earliest memory of music for sure. Still a banger now.

The worst job I’ve ever had…
I worked for a catering agency when I first moved to London. I’m sure most of them are fantastic but, this particular one was HELL. Needless to say, I wasn’t very good at pouring wine for snooty executives ordering me to refill the salmon blini platter.

Favourite food on tour…
TREK BARS. (Other brands of vegan protein bar are available.)

My favourite word…
Cheeky.

Things that cheer me up…
My friends and family, hearing and falling in love with a new song for the first time, finding a good vegan burger.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Madison Square Garden

I think you should listen to…
‘Paradise’ by Bazzi. My MD and I have been RINSING it on tour. Such a feel good tune.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
P!NK, even though I’ve seen her four times already! Her show is always electric and so inspiring. She’s incredible.

The Great Escape takes place across various Brighton venues from 9th to 11th May.
