Ego Ella May’s silken, honeyed neo-soul and jazz compositions are a pure joy to behold. Her prowess for crafting sprawling, intricate resplendence with her music already marks her out as a formidable contemporary classic in the making. Ahead of releasing her stunning debut record Honey For Wounds later this month, we caught up with the South London artist to talk Spice Girls, Jollof rice and her dream of playing in her home town.

Drawing on her Nigerian heritage and experiences of growing up in London, Ego Ella May reflects on a wealth of personal and universal themes within her music, addressing the turbulence of the world alongside intimate contemplations on her identity, all delivered via her crystalline lyricism. The latest single from her upcoming record ‘Give A Little’ sees her frank and introspective as she muses on the past. A track May wrote after a Reiki healing session, the innate serenity at the core of her music manifests in a tangible, tender catharsis. Speaking on the track she details, “Give A Little is about being sick of your own sh*t, and hoping something will give and it will all make sense. It’s about feeling like something’s got to give (to put it simply)… like there needs to be a silver lining because why tf do I keep making silly mistakes in life”.

Favourite instagram account…

@nedratawwab – she’s a therapist. It helps seeing her prompts and tips as I’m scrolling through my timeline. She writes a lot about boundaries mostly, and I tend to share a lot of her posts on my stories which a lot of people relate to.

The best venue I’ve played…

hmm, i liked playing at the jazz cafe. so many greats have played there! The last time I played there I did it with no shoes on because I wanted to feel that much closer to those who came before (even though I’m fully aware they clean the floors lol)

Earliest song you remember…

Probs a spice girls one. wannabe?

The worst job I’ve ever had…

waitressing in a seafood restaurant. I smelt like fried food every time I came home which wasn’t very pleasant 🙂

The thing I most love to cook is…

Jollof rice. I’ve finally mastered the art of cooking it.

My Favourite word…

LOVE, or WAHOO!

A book I love…

Tuesday’s with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It’s heartwarming, and full of wisdom so I’m always gifting it to people I love or recommending that they read it.

Things that cheer me up…

books & records!

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

Nigeria. Home town🙂it would be sooo nice playing to MY people.

I think you should listen to…

Hak Baker. I love his lyrics and how cocky he is.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Thundercat. you just know it would be a vibe!
