Hackney born and Nigeria raised, Dele Sosimi has enjoyed an esteemed career as an Afrobeat pioneer playing keyboards for both Fela and Femi Kuti. On third solo album You No Fit Touch Am he displays a more moderate temper than his forebears, cutting the psychedelic prog influences from Fela’s approach (with the exception of the excellent title track) and keeping everything neatly under ten minutes. The result is an album both clinical in execution and brimming with vitality. Like his previous outings, there are various homages to James Brown scattered throughout, cocooned inside funk guitar riffs. There are political sentiments too – the anti-militia ‘Na My Turn’ for instance, but final track ‘Sanctuary’ espouses the strongest message of all: music is our sanctuary.
