Declan McKenna // In Short

It’d be nice to skirt round the fact, it’d be nice if it was ‘all about the music, man’, but it’s not and there’s no way of discussing Declan McKenna without mentioning the fact he’s sixteen years old. Sixteen. More unsettling than that, this sixteen year old has conjured up a record, in ‘Brazil’, that everyone seems to love. Well apart from, erm, Declan McKenna who includes it in his songs he hates the most. So, with apologies to pop-punk, and a nod to seminal movie ‘Bratz, Forever Diamonds’ we get to know Declan a little better…

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use:
Vivaldi On Hallucinogens

My favourite film ever is:
Bratz, Forever Diamondz

The most famous person I’ve met is:
Geoff Hurst

The song I hate the most is:
That one about the cheerleader, all of pop punk, and Brazil by Declan McKenna.

The worst job I’ve ever had is:
One of the two proper jobs I’ve had, but neither were really that bad, and I’ve now decided to write songs about feelings, so I can’t really have a stance on real jobs.

If I was in a tribute band it would be:
Sham! (Wham!), The Von Blondies, or Flat White Family (Fat white family but with coffee puns).

My favourite word is:
‘Nice’, but only when said by Michael Rosen.

If I had a super power I’d want to:
Swim and Sleep like a Shark

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be:
At a roller disco.

I think you should listen to:

James Missin, UMO, Dirty Projectors, Rick Astley, De La Soul

Declan McKenna plays The Great Escape (May 19th-21st), Field Day (11th-12th June)
