Surf’s up London! But wait – surely not in Primrose Hill? Why yes, because that’s where swell quartet Dead Coast washed up and recorded their splendid debut album, Shambolic.

Dropping in at R.I.P. Studios, the album was recorded and mastered by Syd Kemp and captures a band totally comfortable in its nostalgic rock ‘n’ roll pomp. From the slow-burning tune ‘ESP’ and its half-drawled singing of frontman Luca Bianco, to the up-tempo burning waltz of ‘Jenny Loves the Sun’ this is the sound of a band totally at home with its edgy, if suitably classic, sound.

Unearthing the delights of surf rock and rolling it up in a laid-back, blues-ridden psych beat, Dead Coast believe they are ‘something of a British counterpart to smooth San Fran rockers Allah-Las’. While their influences from bands such as ‘The Doors and The Growlers’ shine proudly through. So it’s no wonder that singer and guitarist Luca cites the influence that Captain Beefheart has had on the psychedelic rock band.

Luckily for you, Friday is your chance to go hear for yourself as the band plays The Shacklewell Arms (February 5th) with support from Suntrap. And while Luca positively rules out any Simply Red covers, we think you’ll be delighted with one of the capital’s hottest new bands.

Fresh off a plane from a gig in Italy, we caught up with Luca to ask him the burning questions, which featured Wolf from Gladiators and his fond feelings for occasional werewolf Michael J Fox.
