We spoke to Dan Caplen in the midst of his most recent collaboration with LiS favourite, Ms.Banks.

Quietly bubbling under for the last two years, Caplen has already been championed by tastemakers like Pigeons & Planes, Clash Magazine and MTV.  Following the monumental success of “These Days”, which he wrote for Rudimental and features on, he has also been spotlighted as BBC R1 Introducing’s Artist of the Week earlier this year. His most recent single “Trouble”, release in June, featured UK rapper and preview LiS cover star Ms.Banks.

The Brixton based singer-songwriter shared with us a few tracks that have inspired him.

John Legend – Used To Love You

I was probably 13 when I first heard this tune and instantly loved it, it made me want to get into music production. Kanye was the producer, that was when he was King Kanye.

James Blake – Wilhelm Scream

Just a beautiful song, I had it on repeat for a long time. I first heard it as it was used in the outro of an “Entourage” episode. A lot of the music I made when I first started out was a spring board off that.

SBTRKT – Wildfire

The first thing I ever uploaded into YouTube was a cover of this fucking JAM! I recorded it in my makeshift home studio in Portland, Oregon after I’d finished at University. It was the thing that got me into the music industry – it was an exciting time.

All of The Lights – Kanye West (and a shit tonne of other people)

Look up the credit list on this track … it is incredible. Anytime I hear that horn intro I get so fucking pumped!

D’Angelo – How Does It Feel

The godfather of neo soul. I remember my brother playing me his first album when I was 14/15 and I was mesmerised by the harmonies. It just reminds me of trying to be smooth with girls when I a teenager.
