Cut Ribbons // In Short

Cut Ribbons

With their killer debut album, fizzing with synth-pop hooks and silky vocals due for release on the mighty Kissability records in August, we caught up with Cut Ribbons ahead of their show at Birthdays on July 22nd, with our very own Colleagues. They talk us through stopping time, being an extra and falling in love with Father John Misty:

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
Fizzy. Dreamy. Grand

My favourite film ever is…
Just everything by Wes Anderson. The Life Aquatic is just incredible, all his films are incredible. The richness of the characters, the visual playfulness and the attention to detail is something that really appeals to me. The stories are real or seem that way when you watch them and are the foundation to his films instead of being reliant on some Michael Bay FX laden robotic disaster.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
Wesley Snipes. I was an extra in a film and I ended up being behind him in the lunch queue. Nice guy, terrible film. Also being an extra sucks so bad. It was filmed in Newport docks, I guess because it’s cheaper than London, and I had to walk off of a ship over and over again in a perpetual nightmare, a preview of a hellish eternity, whilst huge clouds of coal dust blew into my face. Fun times…..

The song I hate the most is…
Everything by ABBA. Certainly my most hated palindrome.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
I have enjoyed all the jobs I have had. I did cut the tip of my finger off whilst working in a factory in Cardiff. It was ok though, I stuck it back on with super glue and played a show the next day.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
The Smiths. I would love to pretend to be Johnny Marr because lets face it, he’s the coolest motherfucker alive. I would get the haircut but I don’t think I would do the abstinence from alcohol thing… let’s not get too crazy.

My favourite word is…
Pili Pala. I know that’s technically two but it means one thing, it’s the Welsh word for butterfly. I just think it sounds really cool and anyone that says it sounds around five years old. It’s quite beautiful.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
The ability to stop time like that show Bernard’s Watch but obviously much cooler. For the people who don’t know, Bernard’s Watch was a children’s television program about this kid who had a magic watch that could stop time. The problem being that he used it for totally stupid shit like revising for a test that he had forgotten about. Even if he had waited until the end, stopped time and copied everyone’s work I would have had some respect for him but if you have the ability to stop the world spinning then you don’t need to do a maths test, you don’t have to go to school, you could literally rule the world. I would be ashamed if he was my child.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Under the sea. Everyone’s seen The Little Mermaid, it looks like hell of a laugh. Apparently the Plaice plays the bass and the Fluke is the duke of soul so that’s a bonus.

I think you should listen to…
Father John Misty, he’s the man. I Love you, Honeybear is just constantly on at the moment, it’s a pretty perfect album for me. His voice is out of this world and the arrangements are so considered and radiate cool. I’m looking forward to catching his set in Iceland in November.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
Can they be dead? I would have loved to have seen Nirvana. Nevermind was the first album I ever bought with my own money, so that would be a no brainer.
