Cults – Static // Album Review

cults staticColumbia // October 14th

You may have been forgiven for thinking that Cults’ main ambition in life was to use their songs to sell cider. Alas it is not. Instead, they create delicious slices of humble pop pie. Their sophomore effort lives up its name in ‘Static’. Brian and Madeline have pushed their surf pop influences towards the background and instead adopted a more raucous noise than their debut. They’re still instantly recognisable as Cults, but they’ve experimented with far more instruments and effects pedals than before. Record number two is less Beach Boys, more Beach House. It’s still fantastic. Damn that’s tasty pie.
