Bernard + Edith // In Short

Bernard + Edith

As summer beats a hasty exit from our lives, and rain draws in over London, we look North to places more accustomed to such precipitatious times and achieve rare empathy with the city of Manchester. What we find there, though, is not cliched drabness but instead the vibrant colours of Bernard + Edith; an act whose music is an opulent melding of psychedelia, R&B and arty electro-pop – plus, roughly, a million other intricate sonic explorations. Suitably intrigued by what we discover, we throw a handful of questions at the band, in order to know the inner-workings of their collective mind a little better.

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
Metallic china bass.

My favourite film ever is…
One masterpiece we both love is The Shining. The ‘Main Title Theme’, composed by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind, is a real big inspiration to us and, side-by-side with the visuals, it’s a timeless classic.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
Nick: I met Jonathan Davis from Korn at Rock am Ring.
Greta : For me, it has to be Alex Hewett from Egyptian Hip Hop, what a boss.

The song I hate the most is…
It’s hard to say, there’s so much cringe in the world and so much trash music around.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
Greta: As a cleaner in Moss Side, I had to work from five in the morning cleaning offices. I got fired cos I put too much polish on the desks and the workers mugs would slip around the tables and spill.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
The Twin Peaks Roadhouse Bar Band.

My favourite word is…
Buffy.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
Invisibility.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
In China, in front of a big temple on top of a mountain, surrounded by lots of beautiful women dressed in gold and red with a huge traditional Chinese orchestra playing alongside us. Oh wow, China wow wow wow wow wow.

I think you should listen to…
Some friends of ours from Manchester called Ménage à Trois; they’re our favourite band in Manchester. We listen to their music a lot, it’s really chilled and uplifting; think of a hot, sunny turquoise day by the poolside in Spain. That’s how you feel when you listen to them.

If I could see anyone play live it would be
Billie Holiday.
