An undeniably unique and intriguing talent, Beija Flo creates a delicate, eclectic sonic cosmos within her music that is deeply personal whilst warmly inviting you into her world. She recently released her third single ‘Nudes’ and plays The Waiting Room tomorrow evening with Eyesore & The Jinx. We get to know the quick-witted and enigmatic creative polymath In Short.

Expressing insecurities that are all too familiar, on ‘Nudes’ Beija Flo explores her relationship with her own body and crafts an intimate space within the music. Yet whilst the lyrics, delivered by way of dulcet, soaring harmonies, offer an earnest vulnerability Beija Flo also expresses an empowering fearlessness, emphasising this sense of coming to terms with personal insecurities and struggles and embracing our differences with a vibrant vivacity. On her latest track, she pertinently expresses “Life is a series of shifts. People visit. Some leave gifts behind. Some litter. Some decimate. The brain and the body has become a personal jungle; dangerous and eerie at night-time. Nudes is loneliness in limbo. Nudes is anguish. Nudes is trust. Nudes is doubt. Nudes is fear. Nudes is exhaustion. Nudes is therapy. Nudes is mine.”

The best venue I’ve played…

The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge, supporting the International Teachers of Pop. The venue serves Indonesian food and had a Cold War Steve exhibition up. I’ll say no more.

Earliest song you remember…

Well, having been the big bang, that would have to be “Hurrian Hymn No. 6”, I mean, obviously back in 1st century A.D. we knew it as “Seikilos Epitaph”. It was either the first song ever written down or just one of the first, I can never remember. We have electronic tablets which is a lot easier than engraving ancient tablets, so the songs pretty accessible now.

The worst job I’ve ever had…

Ooo.. I think that would have to be.. when I was Cleopatra’s personal advisor in 43? 42 BC? I told her stop the bloody affair. Then obvs Antony just HAD to invade the Parthian Empire AND the Kingdom of Armenia, even though he was skint. Cleo being blimming Cleo was like ‘oh don’t worry, I’ll pay for it la la la’ – silly cow. Anyway, of course the Octavian’s weren’t having none of it, one thing led to another, and it all ended in tears. That was the last time I ever gave military advice. I actually became a pacifist after that. And a vegan.

Favourite food on tour…

Gravel salad and a bottle of whiskey.

My Favourite word…

Vagina.

Things that cheer me up…

The sound of babies crying, police sirens and just anything with a pulse really. Except Boris Johnson.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

Future Yard, Birkenhead (is the future)

I think you should listen to…

Fu Hsi.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Him. It’s always been him.
