Avec Sans // In Short

avec sans

Alice Fox and Jack St. James AKA charismatic London -based duo Avec Sans make the kind of shimmering, effervescent, 80’s tinged synthpop that should be up there in the charts with the likes of Chvrches and MSMR. Following a series of tour dates supporting electro-europop stars-in-the-making Mausi and pop sensation Little Boots and having just released their ‘Shiver’ single, we get to know them a little bit more…

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, we’d use…
ALICE: Sad, Happy, Pop
JACK: Hooky, Credible, Pop

My favourite film ever is…
ALICE: Really hard to pick, probably The Royal Tennenbaums. The bitter/sweet romance between Margot and Ritchie and the perfect styling of absolutely everything really got me.
JACK: Forrest Gump, That movie has everything in it.

The most famous person I’ve met it…
ALICE: Probably Emma Bunton, in a TV studio, she looked pretty pissed off to be there, then when the camera turned on she lit up like Vegas, an absolute pro.
JACK: I think it has to be Pharell Williams. He was surprisingly friendly and laid back.

The song I hate the most is…
ALICE: Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, it lyrically contradicts itself, it’s horribly rapey but then it’s so catchy that I find myself singing it and then get in a self-loathing cycle.
JACK: Rebecca Black – Friday. You can’t say “thank god it’s Friday” without having that damn song pop into your head. Someone needs to do a better Friday based song.

The Worst Job I’ve ever had is…
ALICE: Working for a gun crime unit, my predecessor left the role in the boot of a car after witnessing a shooting. I spent a lot of time in a lot of really horrible buildings, in really shady areas, looking at mug shots and becoming paranoid about the whole world.
JACK: I had a brief stint working in a telecoms company. I would finish everything I needed to within the first 20minutes, then I was required to look busy for the other 7hrs and 40mins. I would genuinely wish a horrible disease on myself so I could go on a long sick leave. Mostly though I went into the marketing cupboard and take long naps.

If I was in a tribute band it would be a….
ALICE: Arcade Fire covers band, I imagine that would make me pretty happy, their songs are so euphoric and brilliant.
JACK: I think I’d go for something like a Basement Jaxx cover band. Those guys get to have a total party on stage every single show. I’d put on a costume and show everyone my moves.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
ALICE: The ability to be a dirty stop out all the time and never feel terrible the next day. So maybe more the ability to get by without sleep and invincibility against handovers.
JACK: Can the ability to print money be considered a superpower? Probably not the thing you were looking for in the question. I think I’d like to control air… think about it… you could fly, start fire, freeze, breathe underwater, create force fields out of air pressure. Im going to sell that one to Marvel and get a movie made.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
ALICE: Somewhere with dinosaurs
JACK: Alice wants to play a show in Jurassic Park? I dunno, it didn’t work out so well for them in the movies. But since we are living in a dream world my dream was always to play The Astoria. I went to my first gig ever there and it was always my dream to play on that stage until they tore it down 🙁

I think you should listen to…
ALICE: Purity Ring or Chairlift’s track I Belong in Your Arms which is my favourite track at the moment, it’s such a perfect song and makes me feel stupidly happy.
JACK: Moderat, Apparat, Baths, Flume, Briads, Policia, Lorde, Everything Everything, Atoms For Peace, any remix by Amtrac or RAC etc etc

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
ALICE: LCD Soundsystem and now I never will, and the really bitter pill is that I was at Bestival a couple of years back, they were playing as the very last act at the very end of the festival. I was so incredibly broken by that point that I couldn’t make it as far as their set, even fully knowing that I’d never get the chance again. My super power of no sleep and hangover invincibility could have averted this horrible incident.
JACK: Man, I wish I got to see MJ’s This Is It. The production looked out of this world. One of the worlds greatest entertainers with the worlds greatest session musicians, dancers and production team. It would have been spectacular.
