Art School Girlfriend is the moniker of Polly Mackey, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer from Wrexham, North Wales. Her upcoming second EP Into The Blue Hour tracks her move from London to a tightly knit creative community in the seaside town of Margate, where she now lives and runs an art bookshop – Spine Books – with her girlfriend. We caught up with the artist to find out about a few things that do (and don’t) make her tick ahead of her UK tour.

At 18, Polly Mackey moved to London from her hometown of Wrexham. The founder of Welsh shoegaze outfit Deaf Club, Mackey and her bandmates eventually all moved to the capital with hopes of pursuing a full-time career in music. Working in bars and interning at fashion magazines and record labels, Mackey threw herself into London’s creative ecosystem.

Three words to describe our/my music
Chill, electronic, fabulous

Favourite Instagram account…
@bandmemes666  or @dogseatinggently – which pretty much sums up my life interests of music and dogs.

The best venue I’ve played…
I really love Scala. It feels intimate but also has a sense of importance. Like a baby grand piano 🎹

Earliest song you remember…
My sister and I used to do karaoke in our living room every Sunday after bath time when I was like, 3. My parents have some old VHS footage of me yelling a long to Dizzy by Vic Reeves and The Wonderstuff and I can’t really remember any music before that song. It has 11 key changes so it’s therefore quite credible.

The worst job I’ve ever had…
A paper round in the winter.

Favourite food on tour…
When we have a day off and I cook.

My Favourite word…
Tonic.

Things that cheer me up…
Eating, the sun, seeing friends. I also get a real sense of calm watching gear videos on YouTube.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Mexico

I think you should listen to…
Dreams by Kelsey Lu. It’s so beautiful. But be patient, wait for the vocals come in at 4.08.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
I’ve seen so many of my favourite artists I can’t really think of anyone. Unless this question allows for time travel… I have a friend who saw PJ Harvey in San Francisco in 1992 and I think that would blow my mind.
