Anna McClellan’s music feels immediately sprightly, grounded, frankly ruminative, and playful all at once. Given her aloof yet warm confessional songwriting, it makes sense that McClellan has toured with Frankie Cosmos (a dream combo tbh). With her new single ‘Raisin’ just out we caught up with McClellan to talk eggs, biking and Chaka Khan.

‘Raisin’ waltzes along with jaunty, effervescent organ melodies and sauntering basslines, gracefully sashaying into accentuated percussive bursts as McClellan’s dulcet yet almost deadpan vocals chime in and gently sway with the instrumental accompaniment. These intricate arrangements and the undulating flow of ‘Raisin’ craft a breezy lightness that you can’t help but get swept up in.

“I have long romanticized the idea of jumping off a cliff, and categorized it as the perfect metaphor for letting go. If I could only take that leap of faith, I’d awaken.” McClellan explains of the idea behind ‘Raisin’. “I’d been wanting to capture the idea in song for a while and thought it would be a much longer/more epic endeavor. And I’m sure there is still much more to say about it. In ‘Raisin’ though, upon jumping, the subject appears to float and become weightless. Never actually landing at all.”

The worst job I’ve ever had…

American Apparel I guess? Almost all my jobs have been in the service industry, and they always suck. It’s the coworkers that save them. But American Apparel was the most corporate job I’ve ever had.

Things that cheer me up…

Biking changed my life.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…

In a post-capitalist, postcolonial, post-abolition, climate conscious United States where everyone has agency over their own bodies and are empowered to move from a place of honest feeling. That would be such a cool show!! Or if you want my whimsical answer: the moon. Show on the moon would be sick. It’d be all dark.

I think you should listen to…

Chaka Khan

If I could see anyone play live it would be…

Alice Coltrane

‘I saw first light’ is due out November 20th on Father/Daughter Records. Pre-order here.
