Cutting her teeth in Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s The Cairo Gang band, Missouri-born Angel Olsen hits new heights on her second solo album. Now heading a trio, the guitar/bass/drums band sound relaxed and having fun with their classy southern-tinged, Pixies-meets-The Carter Family rock. But it’s Angel’s three tracks without the band that shine. ‘White Fire’ firmly sets the mood to gloomy as she tenderly eeks out “Everything is tragic/It all just falls apart” over a droning electric guitar. They’re obviously important songs to Angel since she chose the reverberating twang of ‘Unfucktheworld’s ramshackle acoustic guitar riff and dizzying multi-tracked singing to kick off the album in its glorious, pensive intensity.
