We spoke to the enigmatic and intriguing artist Alxndr London as he returns with new EP 2023.

The EP marks his debut on Gaika’s new imprint The Spectacular Empire and effortlessly blends soul, r&b and electronic music whilst subverting it into something completely his own.
‘2023’ is inspired by the sounds of UK Funky, London’s Garage sound, Yoruba Spirituals and Electronic Soul; an experimental project rooted in a genre-less space that balances spiritual conflict and Afrocentric themes, with unconstrained fantasy and spectacular science-fiction…
We asked Alxndr to tell us about five tracks that have inspired the release.

Violet Stars Happy Hunting – Janelle Monáe

Heard this song 10 years ago and immediately wanted to be Janelle’s bestie. There’s this gritty steam punky futuristic rebel attitude feel.

Jai Paul – BTSU

I didn’t know kids from London were at liberty to do this. I absolutely felt like the doors allowed to make songs like this. I remember playing this to me in like 2013/2014 and my heart skipped a beat.

Amy Winehouse – My Bed (Bugz In The Attic Remix)

Again I thought jazz and soul in London could only look a certain way till homegirl introduced the idea that hip hop and reggae could be interjected to create a unique entity of its own.

Jazztronik – Samurai

I sweated to this tune on many a dance floor. Something about garage and the broken beat sound merging with jazz and the keys have never left my head.

Aaliyah – Are You That Somebody

The Missy-Timbaland-Aaliyah triangle has always encouraged me to delve deeper, explore, experiment and discover new what’s to express my sound. What these lots achieved is golden to me.

Alxndr London’s EP ‘2023‘ is out 14th June 2018
