Swedish singer-songwriter Albert af Ekenstam makes music that is both grand yet intimate at the same, and by naming some of his influences as Explosions in the Sky, Bon Iver and Mogwai, it’s easy to see where his ambient yet melodic sound comes from.

Having this year released two singles on Swedish label Kning Disk (‘Walking’ and ‘Angel Liz’) and acted as a warm up act for The Posies and Bear’s Den, his latest offering ‘Made of Gold’ is an introspective and ambient piano ballad that builds to a striking finish.

Ahead of a show at Union Chapel tomorrow, we got to know Albert a little better.

If I had to describe my music in 3 words, I’d use…
Melancholic, dark and personal.

 My favourite film ever is…
Movies about fishing. I love to be in nature and when I’m not, I can watch those kinds of movies to get away.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
Terry Jones (from Monty Python) I think, we met on a BBC radio programme when I played guitar with Sumie.

The song I hate the most is…
None. I think everyone does music in their own way and it’s not my task to judge them.

The worst job I’ve ever had is…
Can’t remember one in this moment.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…
Nirvana, I listened to them a lot during my teenage years.

My favourite word is…
Bird, because a bird can get away whenever they want.

If I had a superpower I’d want it to be…
I’m happy as it is. I try to live in the now but if I was able to not sleep I could probably work harder with the music.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Woodstock.

I think you should listen to…
Sun Kil Moon

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
Jimi Henrix. One of my big idols.

Albert af Ekenstam plays Union Chapel on 10th November.
