As acab brik releases the first single from their upcoming mixtape today, we caught up with them to talk memes, McCoys crisps and Katy Perry.

Swirling with warped, lo-fi electronica and effervescent pop inflections, ‘old pain’ is a melancholic, shimmering slice of emo-trap. Complete with introspective, emotive lyrics delivered via distorted, tender vocals, ‘old pain’ offers a entrancing debut and introduction both to the South London artist and to the collective as a whole.

The creative alias of Joey Ashworth, who also forms part of emo-punk outfit itoldyouiwouldeatyou, acab brik is co-founder of South London hard-left rap collective acab family. Speaking on ‘old pain’, brik details “It’s about heartbreak as an aesthetic. If you treat your feelings that way, one day they won’t suit you anymore. So this song is kinda the absurd limit to that, like seeing yourself in the mirror and feeling like you don’t look good in sadness anymore. And is that better? Do I want that ‘old pain’? Or a new pain. How about no pain at all.”
