Whistlejacket // In Short

We were blown away by Whistlejacket’s intoxicating mix of shoegaze and psychedelia when we caught them supporting Bully recently. Now with their debut EP coming out on Fierce Panda in February they’ll be partying at Sebright Arms on January 26th to celebrate independent venues week, undoubtedly transfixing the audience with their deceptively catchy sound.

Ahead of the show we got to know the band a little better and jumped into the swirling depths of ‘Stay-N’:

If I had to describe our music in 3 words, I’d use…
Hazy, fuzzy and loud I guess, there are no 3 words that I could be satisfied with.

My favourite film ever is…
Either The Lord of The Rings, I count all 3 as one film, so maybe that’s cheating, also I love My Own Private Idaho.

The most famous person I’ve met is…
I Shook Bruce Springsteen’s hand once, he signed something for me and I welled up in the taxi home, does that count as a meeting?

The best venue I’ve played so far is…

The Forum in Kentish Town, it was part of a crappy battle of the bands type thing but sound checking on that stage and looking up into the space was unreal.

The song I hate the most is…
Christ, I dunno, I don’t really pay too much attention to the music I don’t like, there’s very few songs i’d give the energy to hating rather than just not giving a shit about. I feel like I’m supposed to say Bieber or One Direction but the truth is I don’t even know what they sound like and it’s so easy to let it wash over you. I guess there are two songs I really hate, the first is the jingle on my girlfriend’s alarm, every day it’s like, “that fucking song!” and the other is that selfie song, it’s appalling but you know it’s probably not the worst song in the world. I guess the standard Apple alarm has gotta be the one.

The Worst Job I’ve ever had is…
Flyering in Leicester Sq for a comedy club, I had to stand on a corner in Leicester Sq for 3 hours each shift and hand out flyers, the pay was crappy. Every week there’d be the same buskers doing the same act – there’s only so many times you can hear helicopter noises being beat boxed into a crappy amp or watch the same break dance moves before you lose your mind.

If I was in a tribute band it would be…

a Queen themed band, we’d be called “Queens” and it’d all be done in drag, I’d love to just stand at the back and play pompous guitar riffs.

My Favourite word is..
Foible, maybe, it’s sounds so Blackadder. I don’t think I have one really, I have a friend who uses crud a lot and that always makes me smile because it seems like such a sweet way to show dislike for something.

If I had a super power I’d want it to be…
Either invisibility or telekinetic abilities, those would be cool

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
There are obviously legendary venues that we dream about playing, festivals as well, cities we’ve never played in. But if we could play anywhere I wanna do something that’s never been done, but everything’s been done already…Simply I’d love to play in America, such a vast amount of space, so many cultures in one country, travel is relatively cheap, just hire a van and go. What could be better than a road trip with your best friends, playing shows in a new place every night?

I think you should listen to…
WAW, formerly Puffer, who I loved, they’ve changed they’re name and I think that Whatever they do as WAW is gonna be super interesting to say the least. The new Fuzz record is also great.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
Dead? Nirvana. Alive? Maybe Tom Waits, Iggy Pop or Herbie Hancock, there are loads of people I wanna see. But after last week, with Bowie passing, you gotta make sure you see the legends before it’s too late.
